Standard Fitting
The standard stereo in the GTI varies around the world. In Europe (and most of the world) it seems to be a Blaupunkt unit called a Peugeot Audio 2040. This unit has no display and relies on the display on the top of the dash. Previously I thought that Australia got a different Blaupunkt unit, however, it appears that we get a Eurovox 4068 unit (based on the separate manual that comes with the car). This unit is fitted in Oz by Inchcape before shipping to dealers. A little more information is available from Andrew's review (see under reviews on the right).
Currently no one seems to like these units very much. The main issues with replacing them revolve around getting it integrated with the Car's display (not possible) and the audio control stalk on the steering wheel column.
I'm very interested in hearing ANYONE's experiences with installing other equipment, especially getting it to work with the control stalk and what works and what doesn't.
There was a discussion about this on the Yahoo! Peugeot 206 club page a while ago.
- Blaupunkt RD148 Modena can be adapted with an interface and an adaptor (7 607 569 510 & 7 607 621 134). Although the Modena may not be made anymore.
- Some Kenwood and Sony units can be adapted, but the Kenwood adapter is expensive. The Sony one is meant to be a bit easier. Trying to find information from Sony regarding fitting.
- The Alpine part for '99 and '00 spec cars is KCE-870B and harness KWE-891E - see this page.
Update 7/4/2000
note: apparently the 2000 206's have changed a little and the Autolead kit may not currently work. Sony may produce a kit and am trying to find more information.
Chris Adkins (black_gti_boy@yahoo.com) posted to the Yahoo! 206 club pages recently the following:
I now know that the Sony stereos definitely can be adapted to fit the stereo stalk (by the way, Sony are bringing out their new models in the
next week or so - including a recordable in-car Minidisc player!!!).
You need an Autoleads adaptor PC9-119.
Check out their web-site here:

I think most UK car audio suppliers use these people for their fascia bits and cabling/connectors, so it should be easy to get hold of.
I think that the stalk adaptor was about £40-50 in the Demon Tweaks catalogue I was looking at yesterday.
I should be getting mine sorted in the next two or three weeks, so if any else gets a Sony stereo fitted before then, let us know (particularly if
it's a Minidisc head unit and CD changer).
Cheers
Chris
