The day had threatened to rain but by about 9am cleared up and stayed that way most of the day.
The field consisted of eight 206GTi's, five 206CC's, one 206XT, a 306GTi-6 and a
205GTi-Dimma, 16 cars in total. A couple of interesting examples with a 2003 206cc
with all the new facelift items, including new rear lights, new front grill and chromed
glove box handle. And a custom 206cc with a full red leather interior and colour coded
bumpers.
The idea of this drive was simple - navigate your way through the streets of Perth,
following a given route of cryptic instructions while trying to gather both answers
to questions and scavenger hunt items. After a quick debrief session and photos, the
cars lined up one after the other and left at 1-minute intervals.
Some of the questions forced you to interact with the public.... the Porter at the
Hyatt hotel didn't even bother to ask what we wanted ... he just said "The Merlin" when
we pulled up (the question was "What was the Hyatt Hotel called when it was first built").
Similarly when a question asked "Who guards this house" and we were unable to see anything
- asking the owner his dog's name, was a logical question - we'd failed to see the
Chubb Security sign :) (the dog's name way Trixie by the way).
We crossed the paths of several competitors (sometimes going the wrong way) and after
almost 3 hours and a mere 53kms we thought we'd have to be the last in (we left last),
but somehow we'd managed to pass quite a few other teams. The field was spread by about
20 minutes at the start, but by the end was spread over 2 hours ! The distanced covered
ranged form the low 50's to almost 100kms. We ventured through the City Centre, West Perth,
Shenton Park, Cottesloe, Mosman Park, Dalkeith and Nedlands (how someone ended up in
Fremantle I'll never know).
The points were tallied.... the winners took home a bottle of wine - to the last place
team a packet of Minties. While friendships and marriages had almost been broken during the
day (or at least severely stressed :) ... all were patched over a couple of drinks in the
beer garden.
Thanks to Aart from CCC for doing the route planing and organising the event.
Next runs planned:
Early September 2003 - Rally Australia day in Jarrahdale (to be run by CCC) and
28th September 2003 - AussieFrog York cruise (run by L'escadron)
Stay tuned for details.
